10 Best Overstable Disc Golf Putters

When most new players think of putters, they naturally think of a disc used for putting and putting only.

Putters however are much more versatile than they're often given credit for, which is why they're often categorized as "putt and approach", rather than putting only.

Given their importance for approach shots, an overstable putter is an absolute staple for all players looking to get themselves close to the basket, and the ability to finish out a hole in as few strokes as possible.

Putters are excellent for approach shots because they're often very precise and easy to control, and very slow flying which helps prevent large skips.

Overstable putters are especially popular options because they

  1. Can handle wind easier than stable and understable options

  2. Can handle forehand shots

  3. Fly with very predictable flight patterns

Specifically, overstable putters are used for stout headwinds, for forehand approaches, and shots that require excessive fade or hyzer.

And they're used when the shot calls for a distance shorter than what would warrant an overstable mid-range, generally 200 feet or less, but not always as you will ultimately decide the capabilities of your discs with your skill level.

Now that we brought up the importance of overstable putters and when they can be used,

Do you have specific shots in mind on specific holes where you envision an overstable putter being useful?

Whether you're a fan of Discraft or not, it's hard not to like the Zone, as it is one of the most popular approach putters ever!

This due in part to it's versatility in a wide array of upshots, being able to do everything from forehand flex shots to backhand shots requiring a lot of fade.

It can simply do it all!

It is such a good approach putter, that I'm not sure that I have every heard of anyone using it as a putting and putter and some players even consider it more of a mid-range than a putter.

Regardless, I carry two in my bag, one in Jawbreaker and one in Big Z plastic, and I highly recommend you try one out too!

2. Innova Pig

Flight Ratings: 3, 1, 0, 3

This disc has gotten a lot of publicity lately and most of that is due to Innova sponsored pro player Ricky Wysocki and his absolute love for the pig!

In fact, he carries several in his cart at all times, all in different wear conditions.

He uses them on approach shots as you would expect, but he is never afraid to use it off the tee, despite its low glide rating of 1.

If you're looking for a deep rimmed putter that will not want to skip past the basket on an approach, then check out the Pig!

Next on our list is an extremely popular disc in Dynamic Disc's line up, the Slammer!

This very overstable putter will definitely fade for you right out of the hand, giving you the consistency you need to park every approach shot you take.

This disc, like many others on the list will perform whether thrown forehand or backhand, whether you need to rip it, or give it some touch, so give it a chance!

If you're strictly an MVP/Axiom fan and are drawn to their unique, two plastic molds, then you MUST bag an Entropy, MVP's incredibly crafted overstable putter.

Especially if you want something Zone-like, but prefer the look and feel of MVP discs over Discraft.

The Entropy feels great in the hand due in part to its superb plastic, but also to the shape of its rim, and will be plenty overstable for all of your approach needs whether you're using it for forehands, backhands, or both.

If you're on the fence about this disc, do not hesitate!

Moving on to number 5 and we reach the Harp by Westside Discs!

The Harp may be slightly less overstable than the Zone, but it is a highly touted fan favorite nonetheless!

Its reliable fade, high speed, and excellent glide make it just as good as any other disc on the list, and a disc that you should not hesitate to try if you get the opportunity whether you want to use it for approaches, putts, or both!

The Innova Aviar is already one of the most popular discs that Innova makes, so it's only natural that their very overstable version of this classic would be an instant hit as well.

By taking the Aviar and beefing it up a bit to make it substantially more overstable, they took an extremely reliable putting putter and turned it into a an extremely popular approach putter that players have come to know and love.

If you are in favor of the Aviar but need something overstable to accompany it, then look no further!

This suggestion may be a bit off the wall for some of you, but sometimes it's best for a player to branch out and try something new to find the exact disc they want!

If you have had trouble getting your hands on other options, such as the Zone, then why not give a newer option a try instead?

One that has the same flight ratings and player raves as those other options.

Prodiscus may not be a brand you hear everyday, but consider giving them a shot and becoming a fan!

Unique in that it may be the only disc on our list that is known as a putting putter, this Paul McBeth inspired putter is a great overstable option for players looking to try something outside the box of your standard putting putters.

It may be overstable, but it flies straight as an arrow for putting and offers a very consistent flight path for longer putts, making it a versatile option to use for both putting and approaches.

If it's good enough for the 5x champ, then why can't it be good enough for you too?!

If the Luna intrigues you, then the Ruin by Infinite Discs will be equally intriguing as it offers flight ratings that mirror the Luna.

Because of this, the Ruin also flies dead straight out to 200 feet, but offers a nice reliable fade at the end of its flight that can be used to your advantage in a variety of situations.

If you don't need or like it as an approach disc, then don't be afraid to putt with it as it just may end up in your bag anyways!

Last, but certainly not least is the Prodigy A3.

Prodigy makes several overstable putters in their lineup and the very overstable A3 is perhaps the fastest, most glidey of them all with a rating of 4 and 4, respectively.

This makes for an excellent approach disc that will get you a little more distance than some of the other molds that they make.

If this is faster than what you're looking for, consider checking out the A1, A2, or PA-1 Instead.

But the A3 is a great option on its own and you will not be disappointed!
