Best Disc Golf Putters for Beginners

Updated: Jun 6, 2021

New to disc golf and have no idea what putters are going to work best for you?

Overwhelmed by all the choices?

Then we're here to help!

It's our hope that with this list you can find the perfect disc golf putter and be rattling chains like a pro in no time.

The great thing about our recommended putters is that they aren't just great for beginners.

These are discs that will continue to serve their purpose for a long time until you have a great grasp on the qualities in a disc you like and dislike.

You may even bag them forever!

The last thing we want to happen is for you to just get comfortable with a disc, only to feel that it limits your game and you're on the search for a replacement.

So, with that all being said, here are our recommendations for the top disc golf putters for beginners!

Flight Ratings: 2, 4, 0, 1

We start off our list right with the very popular Judge, by Dynamic Discs!

It is our top choice as a beginner's putter because it would also be one of our top choices for a player of any skill level. It's that good of a disc and one that Brandon bags now.

It is extremely versatile in that some players use it for approaches to the basket, some use it for putting, and some find it valuable for both.

The Judge feels extremely comfortable and just plain natural in the hand right from the beginning, a huge confidence booster and a quality that helps you be consistent with your form.

It is a straight flyer but will give you a nice, reliable fade at the end of longer flights. The slow speed but long glide means you'll have excellent lay ups to the basket on approach shots with little fear of the disc skipping past it's intended target.

Conveniently, the Judge is included in many of Dynamic Discs Starter Packs, so if you wanted to pick it up in addition to some other great discs for beginners, be sure to check them out!

The Innova Aviar is arguably the most utilized and most popular disc golf putter ever.

I would even go as far to say that nearly every person who has played disc golf has at least thrown one of these straight flyers once in their playing lives.

Despite its fade rating of 1, the Aviar is about as straight of a flyer as one could ask for. It truly is a point and shoot disc and will go wherever it is thrown with little to no fade at all.

Because of this quality, the Aviar is an excellent disc to perfect one's form with as the disc will hold any line that it is put on extremely well.

Another positive is that Aviars come in a wide variety of plastics and weights and can be picked up new for extremely low prices compared to other putters out there.

You'll also find that there are a lot of variations to the Aviar such as the: Aviar Classic, Aviar3, and KC Pro Aviar

These variations will all fly slightly different than the regular Aviar, but if you're seeking a flight characteristic that is a little bit more specific to your putting style, chances are you'll be able to find it in one of these different versions.

Regardless, you owe to yourself as a student of the sport to give the Aviar a shot!

If you're a beginner and struggling with your short game during most rounds of disc golf, then the Deputy by Dynamic Discs just may be your ticket out.

This straight flying, slightly understable putter will still give you that nice straight flight pattern you'll desire as a beginner. However, for longer putts and approach shots, the Deputy will have a tendency to finish more to the right due to small turn rating of -1.5.

This trait will especially help you when putting because beginners often times hit the left side of the basket when putting.

Because this disc wants to finish more to the right, it can help minimize this unfortunate tendency and in turn, rattle more chains and lower your score.

The Deputy also offers a little bit more glide than many putters on the market, which will help beginners achieve a bit more distance with their putter. This is especially useful on short holes when you have an opportunity to throw an Ace!

A bit more stable of a disc than the Deputy, the PA-4 is also an excellent choice for any beginner player learning to play disc golf.

Like the Deputy, this Prodigy putter will still keep you out of the left side of the chains more frequently than a stable or overstable putter, but it will still have a small, nice fade at the end of its flight unlike the Deputy.

This disc is used more frequently by players as an approach disc due to its understable characteristics and ability to hold an anhyzer line, but can be used with high success as a putting putter as well.

Players comment about the consistency they get out the PA-4 from disc to disc so you know exactly what you're getting every time you purchase one.

Last but certainly not least on our list is the Tomb by Infinite Discs.

This putter is one that is sometimes forgotten about, "like a forgotten tomb" you might say.

But once players get to use one, they absolutely love it!

The tomb feels absolutely great in the hand and you cannot go wrong with this putter in the "concrete" blend plastic offered by Infinite Discs.

The Tomb is very straight flying and will remind you a lot of the Judge if you ever get the chance to throw both.

Despite being a straight flyer, this disc will fight turning over on higher power throws due to its fade rating of 1, making it a very beginner friendly approach putter.

Additionally, more advanced players will appreciate being able to get this disc to hold a very good anny or hyzer line.

The Tomb comes in several different plastics and with several unique stamp options, as seen below.

The Roach is one of Discraft's most popular putters for beginners and for good reason!

It has a very straight flight path overall with just a touch of fade at the end of longer flights and it makes for both a good putting putter and throwing/approach putter.

It feels good in the hand and base plastic whether it be Pro-D or Bro-D will be extremely grippy in all conditions and additionally will beat in very well.

It's certainly a putter you want to try!

One of Axiom's more popular molds, the Envy is a putter we couldn't leave off this list.

Players love how comfortable the plastic is from MVP and how well the Envy flies for not only putts, but approaches as well.

Slower speeds will show that fade more than faster speeds, but it is still a very easy disc to handle, even for beginners.

For putts, it will fly dead straight and catch chains like it is its job, be sure to check it out!

And that's our list of top putters for beginners!

But here are some parting tips:

1.) Lighter weight discs will be easier for beginners to throw, especially with drivers, but don't be afraid of heavier weights with putters.

You'll find that heavier putters will resist the wind better and offer you a better putting experience, most notably when your arm strength improves.

2. ) When you find a putter you like, consider grabbing a pack of them for practice sessions.

Not only will this increase the lifespan of your putters, but it will also make your practice sessions more enjoyable as you'll be throwing more plastic rather than chasing down each practice putt you make.

Buying in bulk will also get you a nice discount, which definitely helps the wallet out if nothing else.

You can find all sorts of putter packs at Infinite Discs by CLICKING HERE or by shopping on Amazon below

3. ) Because putting is such an important skill to have and may have the biggest impact on your round score, you may also want to consider grabbing a portable disc golf basket to practice putting whenever you want.

This way you don't need to run out to your local course to practice, but rather set up your basket in the backyard or basement or wherever you want and fit in a quick practice session!

Becoming an efficient putter takes time and practice, but finding the perfect disc for the job is an important part of the equation.

If you feel that you still aren't sure what putter to buy, do not hesitate to send us a message with any questions you may have about what might be right for you, we'd love to help!

I'm in love with my tombs!!! They are severely underrated. I have never used another putter that is as versatile. I enjoy putting, driving and backhand and forehand upshots with this disc. It is extremely reliable.
