What Is the Best MVP/Axiom Control Driver?

Updated: Jan 21, 2022

You've decided that you really like the look and feel of MVP's Gyro technology that is used in both MVP and Axiom brands, but in building your bag aren't sure what control drivers from them are the best.

Control drivers are an integral part of any player's bag, so picking the right ones should not be taken lightly, regardless if you're sticking with one brand or are building your bag with a variety of brands.

Because this task is not always simple, we're here to help you pick not only the most popular, but the best MVP discs to choose from when building your bag and adding those control/fairway drivers.

When building a bag, variety is very important, so we suggest adding at least one stable, overstable, and understable option, if not 2 in instances where 2 stable discs or overstable discs offer slightly different characteristics that can be used in different situations.

For instance, one overstable discs may have a fade of 2 where one may have a fade of 4. Both are overstable, but will each serve their own purpose when out on the course.

On our list, you'll be able to find several of each variety to pick from, and the cool part is you won't have to guess if the disc is good or not because it has already been tested and rated by players from all skill levels!

If you're stuck between a disc or 2 (or even 3), it absolutely doesn't hurt to grab them all and figure out for yourself which one you like more and which one you'll find more useful as everyone likes different things.

If you already have enough control drivers and feel you don't need more, but like the MVP style discs, then definitely check out our lists of

Flight Ratings: 7, 4, 0, 3.5

Every player needs an overstable control driver, and the MVP Resistor fits the description of one to a T. Not only is it one of MVP's most popular discs, but it's one of the more popular overstable control drivers in general.

This reliably overstable disc with its speed of 7 is extremely easy to control for players of all skill levels and makes a great option for flicks and overhead throws in addition to backhand shots where a lot of fade is needed.

It will also handle headwinds like a champ and not turnover on you!

Next up on our list is the straight flying Volt!

This reliable control driver is the perfect disc for new players just starting to push the boundaries of what their arm speed can handle, while experienced players will enjoy how well this disc holds a line before a slight fade for its finish.

The speed of 8 and glide of 5 means that this disc will be easy to control and will carry far down the fairway with ease.

Faster arms may be able to turn this disc over if desired once it gets beat in, but in head winds this disc should fly relatively straight for most of its flight path.

Another stable option comes from the first Axiom disc on this list, the Crave.

The Crave, with its -1, 1 turn/fade ratings, is a disc option that should be a staple in most player's bags: a straight, neutral flying control driver.

Like the Volt, the Crave will be very easy for new, slower armed players to utilize due to its speed of 7, and the turn of -1 will help ensure that it does not fly with too much stability, even with slow arm speed.

More advanced players will appreciate the amount of glide this disc has and will be able to use it in situations where a mid-range is just not quite enough disc, and a faster control driver may overshoot the basket.

Moving on, we arrive at the Axiom Insanity, an extremely popular control driver that players of all skills can learn to appreciate and love.

The speed of 9 is the fastest on our list so far, meaning that it is a great option for players beginning to show faster arm speed, players who already have adequate arm strength, and players who are in between but getting better.

Axiom rates this disc's stability as -2, 1.5 so it does slightly sit on the understable side of the fence, making it more favorable for new players to control, but experienced players who have some snap in their throws will see very straight flight paths out of this disc, especially when thrown on just a touch of hyzer.

The Insanity is a popular option for many players, and would be a great addition to any player's bag!

An understable control driver by numbers, the Amp is a very versatile disc that can find many uses depending on the player and their skill level.

Slower armed players will appreciate the turn of -1.5, allowing for nice, long drives down the fairway, as will experienced disc golf players who will be able to hyzer flip this disc for a nice flex shot.

If however you are looking for a long turnover shot, the Amp can also be the ticket as a flat, powerful release will cause this disc to come out straight but slowly and surely turn, finishing softly to the right.

Players enjoy this disc in tight tunnel shots as the narrow S shaped flight pattern helps keep them on the fairway.

If you're looking for some versatility in your bag, look no further than the Amp!

Number 6 on our list is the Axiom Clash.

This stable to slightly overstable disc complements the Axiom Crave well in that it is nearly identical in all ways except for featuring a little more stability and fade at the very end of its flight path.

Players with stronger arms who like the Crave but need more stability, players looking for a straight flying disc resilient to head winds, or players who are simply looking to add a little more stability to their control driver portion of their bag will all love the Clash.

If you have too much Volt, what can you get? A Shock!

And that is exactly what the Shock is, everything you love in the Volt, but with less turn, more fade, and overall more stability.

Not only is the Shock more overstable than the Volt, but is one of the more overstable options on this particular list to choose from when building the perfect MVP bag.

So if you don't quite need the stability of the Resistor and like the Volt, then you may just want to bridge the gap between the two with the Shock! (Getting all three wouldn't be bad either)

Slow, glidey, favorable turn, and minimal fade, if any ratings would describe a beginner friendly disc, then those would be it!

Because of these ratings, the MVP relay is likely the most new player friendly disc on this list as the easy to control speed and high glide make it a disc that even slower armed players would enjoy throwing.

With a turn of -2, the disc is not overly flippy and should be able to hold most of the lines that it is placed on.

Faster, stronger arms will still find value in this disc if they're looking for a tmid-range/control driver hybrid for hyzer flips or turnover shots, which adds to the versatility and wide range of this disc.

I feel this is a must try disc for any new player who is interested in grabbing and trying an MVP disc!

An alternative but similar option to this disc would be the MVP Signal, so be sure to check it out as well!

If you're looking for just an all around solid, dependable disc, then the MVP Servo may be the disc that you're looking for.

Many players who bag this disc praise how reliable the Servo is and how it is a disc they frequently turn to when faced with straight shots down the fairway from both the tee box or on upshots.

The Servo offers very manageable speed with a rating of 7 combined with excellent glide and turn/fade that will keep this disc straight on the path you want it with a soft reliable fade at the end of its flight.

Give this disc a try! It may just become your primary work horse as well!

Last but certainly not least on our list of best MVP/Axiom control drivers is the Axiom Inspire!

While it is similar to the Crave (#3 on our list), the slightly lower speed and slightly higher turn will make this disc a little more user friendly, especially for for players with slower arm speed.

Although the disc is given a speed rating of 7, the official rating is just under 7 which helps give it the easy to throw reputation.

If you're looking for another solid, straight flying, and easy to handle option, the Inspire is certainly one to consider and grab for your bag!
